SALT CREEK "A" Section

This is an intermediate to advanced Tab.

Everyone has to play this tune and many of you out there know this already. But, what do you do when you have to play a solo on "Salt Creek"?

Well here it is, based on the melody and going off of the melody some key spots.

For people that want to know..........the theory behind some of these licks is this. When a song has I, b7 and 4 chords (G,F,and C) in it primarily (as does Salt Creek) you can solo over the chord changes using the scale of the 4 (C) chord." Wow!! So when I have to play Little Maggie in G,
I can use a C scale to solo over the G and F chords?"

Yes, you can. The only trick is to know when to come out of this way of thinking
and switch back to thinking G scale. Takes some practice.

For all of you that know what I'm saying so far,we're playing the mixolydian mode of a C scale.

Now, for those of you that I lost, here's a simple trick to remember.
In the key of G when you have to play over an F chord, use a C lick.
All of you out there who bought "100 licks" are now digging out the C licks section.
And in there you will see a lick that looks very much like bar #2 in the tab.

The other trick I use over an F (b7) chord is this. Play a D blues lick!! Look at bar # 6....Looks very much like some of the D blues licks in "100 Licks". The theory here is that the same notes that make a D scale sound like blues, are notes that make an F chord sound like F. So play a blues lick in D and it will fit over an F chord

Get out those Band in a Box's and make yourself a track and try some of this out. For those without Band in a Box (shame on you) I'll include the track from it that I use to practice "Salt Creek".

Have Fun !
